Laparoscopic splenectomy

Laparoscopic splenectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the spleen using a laparoscope and specialized instruments. It's become the preferred approach for many conditions requiring splenectomy, offering benefits like reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.

What is Laparoscopic Splenectomy?

Laparoscopic splenectomy involves making small incisions in the abdomen to insert a laparoscope (a thin, telescope-like instrument with a camera) and other surgical tools. The spleen is then carefully removed through one of the small incisions, often with the aid of a retrieval bag.

Why is it Done?

Splenectomy, including laparoscopic splenectomy, may be recommended for various reasons, including:

  • Ruptured Spleen : Life-threatening internal bleeding due to a ruptured spleen from injury or an enlarged spleen.
